The Liberal Studies B.A. will be changing to Interdisciplinary Studies B.A. beginning in Fall 2025.

Engage in Interdisciplinary Explorations

The Liberal Studies major provides students the unique opportunity to pursue their academic passion through many interdisciplinary pathways. You can choose from thematic concentrations or you can Design Your Own major, based on your academic interests and career goals. 

Our Concentrations

Culture Religion & Society

Students with a Culture, Religion and Society Concentration select a minimum of 27 hours from courses in African Studies, Anthropology, Arts, Black Studies, English, Geography, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology and Women’s Studies, with nine of those hours in each of two separate disciplines.

A student can choose to pursue a Culture, Religion and Society track within the Liberal Studies major at any time in her/his college career, although students are advised to declare their major early in order to ensure a timely completion of their degree program.

Environmental Justice

Students with an Environmental Justice Concentration select 21 hours in courses in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environment and Society, and Food Studies.

European Studies

Students with a European Studies Concentration select three hours in the Fine Arts; a maximum of nine hours in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish or Philosophy; and a maximum of nine hours in History or Political Science.

Gender & Sexuality Studies

Students with a Gender and Sexuality Concentration select 24 hours in courses in Women’s Studies, Kinesiology, Psychology and Sociology.

Global Studies

Students with a Global Studies Concentration take nine hours in the Humanities, nine hours in the Social Sciences and six hours in the Fine Arts.  Additionally, students are required to take at least one course addressing issues in each of the following regions: South and Central America; Africa; and Asia.

Individualized Studies

The Liberal Studies Individualized Concentration is open by admission only.

Race and Social Justice Concentration

Students with a Race and Social Justice Concentration select 9 hours in courses in Humanities, History/Social Sciences and additional courses covering specialized topics.
